Ryoko Yashima

現在も800以上の部族が存在し、山岳地方では未だ魔女狩りが行われているパプアニューギニア。ガイドブックもほとんどない現地は、レイプと強奪の危険を伴う厳しい環境。幸運にも現地の日本人に助けられ、今までいかに守られた場に身を置いていたかを痛感して帰国。人の生命力とは何か、現地で撮影した写真とともに思索する。

Yashima traveled to Papua New Guinea: the land home to over 800 tribes and to this day the traditional practice of witch-hunts remains in the mountains. With no guidebooks to prepare her for the life with the danger of rape and violent robery, she met a Japanese person by chance who took her in. Through this series of photographs, Yashima contemplates the lives of locals and their vitality, which was far from her secured life back in Japan.
